NOx and VOC Control and Its Effects on the Formation of Aerosols

چکیده
This research analyzes thequalitative and quantitative behavior of aerosol dynamics resulting from the control of nitrogen oxide (NOx) and volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions by calculating detailed pollutant isopleths. Several emission scenarios are evaluated using various norms to study the nonlinear impact of control strategies. The modeling episode studied is the Southern California Air Quality Study on August 27, 28, and 29, 1987. The modeling domain is the South Coast Air Basin of California. Research suggests that the reduction of NOx and VOC emissions traditionally implemented to control ozone also controls particulate matter, but to a limited extent. Furthermore, the effects of reducing NH3 are more effective in PM control than reducing both NOx and VOC. Simulations indicate that the combined control of NH3 , NOx, and VOC emissions is most effective to reduce particulate matter and ozone in the South Coast Air Basin of California.

Nonlinear relationships between atmospheric aerosol and its gaseous precursors: Analysis of long-term air quality monitoring data by means of neural networks
The nonlinear features of the relationships between concentrations of aerosol and volatile organic compounds (VOC) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) in urban environments are revealed directly from data of long-term routine measurements of NOx, VOC, and total suspended particulate matter (PM). The main idea of the method is development of special empirical models based on artificial neural networks. Th...

[1] The kinetics of ozone (O3) chemistry and its two main precursors, nitrogen oxides (NOx) and volatile organic compounds (VOC), represents an important field of uncertainty in atmospheric chemistry and photochemical modeling. This uncertainty affects the design of control strategies to reduce tropospheric O3 production. The effect of controlling ozone precursors on sensitivity regimes was eva...
متن کاملSimulation of the ozone formation in the northern part of the Po Valley
[1] The formation of photooxidants and aerosols in the Milan area (Po Valley, Italy) has been simulated for 13 May 1998 with an Eulerian model. The high-pressure conditions and the weak synoptic circulation favor the formation of strongly enhanced photooxidants and aerosol levels downwind of the metropolitan area of Milan. The polluted air masses are transported northward where the highest ozon...

The sensitivity of ozone production to precursor emissions was investigated under five different meteorological conditions in the Mexico City Metropolitan Area (MCMA) during the MCMA-2006/MILAGRO field campaign using the gridded photochemical model CAMx driven by observation-nudged WRF meteorology. Precursor emissions were constrained by the comprehensive data from the field campaign and the ro...

[1] Probing techniques are useful to provide diagnostic evaluations of air quality models and to indicate the responses of model predictions to changes in emissions. Three probing tools are available in a three-dimensional air quality model, CAMx: the Decoupled Direct Method (DDM), the Ozone Source Attribution Technology (OSAT), and Process Analysis (PA). These tools are evaluated in terms of c...
